Organizing Your Space on a Budget

I spend a lot of time in my office. It’s where I get ready for my day, shoot content, and even relax. Having a space that's clean and organized has always been important to me, but I’ve never known how to achieve it.

That all changed when I ran into Hillary and Jamie of Sorted and Styled at Target one day.

After they introduced themselves and their business, we got to talking about my organization goals and they said they could help me. Cue the hallelujah chorus.

One week later, they were at my home, sharing solutions and how they could organize my office for me and teach me how to maintain it.

Fast forward, my space is now completed and I couldn’t be more excited to share all that went into making my dream office a reality.

In this post, I’m going to share with you the products and strategies we used to turn my room from crazy to collected.

Let’s kick off with a Q+A with Hillary and Jamie!

Q&A with Hillary and Jame: Expert Tips for Budget-Friendly Organization

Is effectively organizing a space something someone can do on their own, or do they need to hire it out?

This is absolutely a project anyone can do on their own. Although it takes time and patience…once you get started, organizing can be fun and therapeutic.

What is the first step in organizing any space?

The first step is taking inventory of the items you currently have in your space. Before you begin sorting your belongings, create three categories of piles: donate, trash, and keep.

In order to determine which category to place an item into, ask yourself the following questions:

  • When was the last time I used this?

    • If it’s been more than 6 months, it’s probably time to donate or trash it.

  • Does this serve a specific purpose for me or my family? Or do I have something else that could serve this purpose for me?

    • If you have another item that serves the same purpose, it is likely time to give the duplicate away.

  • Is it in good condition?

    • If the answer is “no” and the item has no sentimental value, then you know what to do…

  • Does it have sentimental value?

    • This is a tough one, but if it does have value to you, then find a space to store or display the item.

  • Does this item add value to my life?

    • If you wouldn’t buy the item today or if you never use it, it’s time to donate or trash it.

This initial step in the organization process is called an “edit,” which means eliminating the items you no longer need.

Where can I purchase shelving for my closet and rooms without breaking the bank?

Consider checking out the brand, ClosetMaid, available at Home Depot and Lowe's. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s allow you to virtually design your organization solutions to visualize your space before you begin your project.

Ikea Pax is another budget-friendly organization option. They also have awesome accessories!

Do you have any tips for making the most of small, awkward spaces?

For smaller closets, install shelving and upper and lower hanging bars. You can also use space-saving products like Lazy Susans, product risers, and shelf dividers.

How can I create an organized and visually appealing makeup storage setup?

Whether you’re storing your makeup in a vanity or in your bathroom, try adding small bins to shallow drawers. Next, organize your makeup by category and color. Utilize acrylic pen holders for brushes, eyeliners, and lip pencils. Stackable drawers are the perfect solution for under-the-sink storage. Lazy Susans work well for tall bottles, and risers are perfect for nail polish.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when organizing your space?

There are a few things, but here are some of the biggest no-no’s:

  • Not measuring the space before you begin the project and purchase shelving.

  • Using mismatched containers. It looks cluttered.

  • Skipping labels. Dictate specific containers for each category of your belongings. This keeps your space in order long-term.

  • Neglecting all of your vertical space. Use hooks and shelves so you can utilize your space from ceiling to floor, if needed.

  • Ignoring maintenance. Don’t forget that staying organized is an ongoing process. Regularly maintain and tidy your space.

How can I prevent clutter from accumulating again in the future?

With a maintenance system in place, it's easier to maintain a clean, clutter-free space. Try implementing the "one-for-one" system. For every one item you buy, get rid of one that you already have. This way, clutter won't accumulate again.

I find that when my office is well-organized, I can think more clearly and get things done more efficiently. It's like a breath of fresh air in my creative process.

When I walk into a neat and organized space, I'm instantly inspired to dive into my work. A tidy space helps boost my motivation, which in turn enhances my productivity.

I'm so glad I could share this experience with you guys! I hope these tips from the Sorted and Styled team are helpful.

Budget-friendly organization is entirely possible, and with a little planning and determination, you can transform your space into an organized haven that reflects your style and needs. Happy organizing!
